Wanderer

Narrative songs are vocal works based on narrative poetry (Balladen), whose texts often recount myths, legends, and epic stories. Musically, these works are typically larger in scale and filled with dramatic intensity. The first half of the recital features Robert Schumann’s Heine ballads — BelsatzarDie beiden Grenadiere, and the three-part cycle Der arme Peter— alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s song cycle An die ferne Geliebte.

The idea of “wandering” (Wander) holds a special meaning in the music of Franz Schubert, symbolizing a search for meaning and direction in life. A similar sense of wandering can also be found throughout the life journey of Gustav Mahler. Both composers continually sought a sense of belonging through music. The second half of the recital invites the audience into the inner worlds of these two composers, featuring Schubert’s Erlkönig and Der Wanderer, together with Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder.
